Ranting and Raving - It's what I do [part three]

You know what REALLY ticks me off?

The Canadian law system.

Now I'm saying this as a Canuck that's taken law classes, and who has read through the criminal code once or twice. I'm not saying that Canada's a crappy country - we have it better than most. I'm proud to be Canadian, and I love it here. I don't believe in the death penalty or anything like that.

I just really wish that the law system was a bit...harsher. A lot of the time rapists get less time than pot heads. It doesn't make logical sense. And really, a lot of the criminal code is sort of um...half-assed backwards.

For example the criminal code distinctly says that a fetus is not considered human until it breathes its first breath of air; However, if one were to punch a pregnant woman in the stomach and kill her unborn child they would be charged with murder. Not that anyone should punch a woman in the stomach anyway, but still. It contradicts itself intensely. That just happens to be one of the ones that stick out in my head the most.

Another thing too - we can only get a life sentence. Which is only 25 years. And you can try for parole after about 10 years. Meaning that serial killers only have to stay in for twenty five years...unless at the end of your life sentence they turn around and retry you for another murder.

People under 18 can't be tried as adults. While I do agree with protecting our youth, I do believe that anyone over the age of 12 should know that murder and other such things are bad. Not good. Bad. Things you shouldn't do. We need to be more strict with our kids, if we want them to get the point.

If the Canadian law system were a bit harsher, I think our crime rate would cut down.

So the things here that REALLY tick me off are

Number One: Law systems that contradict themselves. It makes people able to go back to the supreme court and fight their sentences, and really they should if the system is that twisted. And

Number Two: Being too soft on people that pose a threat so society. I thought that the overall well being of society as a whole was more important than just one person?

And that's what really ticks me off today. [you guys shouldn't watch the news, it tends to make people aaaangry]

  1. I KNOW! Holly crap, just because Canada is a peace keeping country, doesn't mean we have to be a pushover about everything.
